Fillers, RRs, ECBs...huh?

Register Rewards (RR) are a Walgreens thang. Check your local weekly ad for items that offer RRs. For example, Men’s(?) Blistex is on sale for $2 this week and offers a $2 RR (I bought some – hopefully I won’t get man lips). So what does this mean? When you purchase the Blistex, you will pay $2 for it. A $2 RR will print with your receipt. You may use the $2 RR just like a coupon (for any product) on your next transaction. Basically, you get free Blistex. RR are treated like coupons, you must have one item for each coupon. Sometimes you’ll need fillers to accomplish this. I’ll discuss fillers in a second.

Extra Care Bucks (ECB) are a CVS thang. They work like RR except you must use your CVS Extra Care Card to receive ECB and cash them in. For example, Maybelline Falsies Mascara is on sale for $5 each this week. If you purchase $15 worth of Maybelline, you receive $5 ECB. Falsies just so happens to be my fave mascara so I jumped on this deal. So, using my $5 ECB, I ended up with 3 tubes of mascara, a loaf of bread, 4 cans of Friskies and a lipstick for $15. Not bad considering $15 would normally only buy 2 tubes of the mascara.

Now, fillers. Let’s stick with the Walgreens Blistex example. I went to the register with the Blistex and a tube of ScarZone. I split my items into two transactions. In the first transaction, I purchased the Blistex and received a $2 RR. I also had three $1 RR from previous purchases and a $1.50 manufacturer’s coupon for my next transaction, the tube of ScarZone. Remember, RR are coupons, you must have one item for each coupon. The four RRs plus the one manufacturer’s coupon equals five coupons. I had one item so I needed four “filler” items to use all five coupons. Find something cheap to use as fillers, like a pencil or a caramel. If you use a $2 RR on a 30 cent item, you have a $1.70 overage that will be applied to your more expensive item. Back to my transaction: ScarZone is normally $11.99. It was on sale for $9.99. I added four 30 cent items to my purchase. $9.99 ScarZone + $1.20 fillers = $11.19  /  $11.19 - $1.50 coupon - $5RRs = $4.69. The fillers helped me get more off my one pricey item. Had I only used the $2 RR, I would have paid $7.99. Clear as mud?
